Most Pakistani freelancers are leaving money on the table by skipping PSEB registration. Here is the complete guide.
The Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) offers registered freelancers and IT companies significant tax benefits on foreign income. Yet most freelancers in Pakistan have never heard of it โ or think it is only for large companies. It is not. Individual freelancers can and should register.
PSEB is a government body under the Ministry of IT & Telecom. Its mission is to promote Pakistan's IT export industry. One of its most valuable programmes for freelancers is the IT Export Certification, which enables registered individuals to claim tax exemptions on income earned from foreign clients.
Any individual providing IT or IT-enabled services (ITES) to foreign clients can register. This includes web and app developers, graphic designers, content writers, digital marketers, virtual assistants, data entry professionals, and more. You do not need a registered company โ individual registration is available.
Even if you have just received your first payment, register now. There is no minimum income threshold for individual registration.
PSEB registration does not replace FBR tax filing. You still need to file an annual income tax return with the Federal Board of Revenue. However, with PSEB certification, your IT export income is taxed at a reduced rate or exempted depending on the current FBR policy. Always consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
While you are at it, register on Digiskills.pk โ a free platform funded by the Government of Pakistan offering courses in freelancing, graphic design, e-commerce, digital marketing, and more. Completing Digiskills courses is also accepted as supporting documentation for various PSEB programmes.
